Special Olympics Aquatics Program Starts March 17 At Moore Aquatic & Fitness Center (March 11, 2005) A Special Olympics Aquatics Program starts March 17 at the Moore Aquatic and Fitness Center at 101 Airport Road. Swim assessments will be conducted at the first meeting. ubsequent meetings will take place on Mondays and Thursdays from 7 8 p.m. There is no charge. Participants must provide their own swim attire. The program is open to participants ages 8 and older that have intellectual disabilities, such as mental retardation, or developmental disabilities. The goal of the program is to help the athletes acquire basic aquatic skills, appropriate social behavior and functional knowledge of the rules necessary to participate successfully in aquatic competitions. Each athlete is expected to receive is an increased level of physical fitness, self-discipline, sport skills, and social interaction.
