Christmas decorations contest announced for Washington businesses (Nov. 28, 2005)

Washington businesses are encouraged to “Light up the City” this Christmas season as part of the annual citywide holiday decorating contest for commercial buildings. The contest is sponsored by the City of Washington.

Decorations on the exteriors of commercial buildings or storefronts will be judged throughout the city. First, second and third place and honorable mention awards will be given for the best displays in each of the following three areas inside the city:

  • Downtown and waterfront. South of Third Street to the river between Bridge and Hudnell streets.
  • East Washington. North of Third Street and east of Market Street.
  • West Washington. North of Third Street and west of Market Street.

Judging will take place between 5-8 p.m. on Monday, December 5. Businesses will be judged for creative use of seasonal decorations with an emphasis on the visual impact of lighting.

Judges will be viewing decorations on storefronts, building exteriors and display windows from a vehicle passing slowly or stopping in front of the building. Judges will not leave the vehicle for close viewing of small details inside display windows.

Every commercial building in Washington automatically is eligible for judging. Businesses do not have to register in advance to be included in the judging.

Previous year’s winners are eligible for awards; however, there is no guarantee that a previous winner will be recognized in subsequent years.

Information about criteria for judging decorations and a list of past years' winners is available on the Washington City Government web site at www.washington-nc.com.
